A storefront lock is what stands between your Dallas shop and the street.

A storefront door lock is a narrow lock built into the thin aluminum frame of a glass shop door, usually a key cylinder that drives a hook bolt or deadlatch into the frame.

  1. KeyThe cylinder turns its cam.
  2. CamThe cam drives the lock inside the door.
  3. BoltA hook bolt swings into the frame and holds.

When one step fails, you find out at closing time. The key won't turn, the bolt won't throw, or it throws but doesn't catch the frame. Leaving the store unlocked overnight, or forcing the key until it snaps, are both bad options.

Fast Local Locksmith repairs storefront door locks across Dallas for business owners, store managers and property managers. We work out whether the problem is the cylinder, the cam, the lock body or the door itself, fix it, and make sure the door locks smoothly with one turn of the key.

One turn. Locked tight.

Dallas storefronts use three main lock setups.

Knowing which one is on your door tells us which parts to bring.

Here is what most business owners don't realize about storefront locks. The lock has to fit inside an aluminum frame only a few inches wide, so it works differently from a regular door lock. The key cylinder screws into the lock body, and a small cam on the back of the cylinder operates the bolt. The wrong cam, a loose cylinder or a worn cam is enough to stop the whole lock working.

We repair storefront locks at commercial addresses across Dallas, from Uptown shops to strip centers along Garland Road, Forest Lane and in Mesquite and Grand Prairie, without a minimum commercial contract requirement. We ask what the door looks like before we arrive so the right cylinders and parts come with the technician.

Older DFW retail strips and newer centers mostly use aluminum narrow stile doors with one of three setups. A hook bolt deadlock swings a curved bolt into the frame and is the common choice for locking up at night. A deadlatch locks automatically when the door closes and is opened with a paddle, lever or key. Many doors also have a key cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside so staff can lock up without a key while customers can still get out.

  • Hook bolt deadlocks.

A curved bolt swings into the frame and resists being pried.

  • Deadlatches.

Lock automatically on closing, opened with a paddle, lever or key.

  • Cylinders and thumbturns.

A key outside, a thumbturn inside, both driving the same lock.

What it actually looks like when we fix a storefront lock that won't lock.

Every storefront lock call starts with two questions: what the lock is doing, and whether the door still lines up.

What makes the difference between a lock that's fixed and one that fails again in a month comes down to checking the door as well as the lock, and only replacing what's actually worn.

Lock or door?

A storefront hook bolt that won't throw at closing time often isn't a lock failure at all. Heavy glass doors wear their pivots, the door drops, and the bolt hits the edge of the strike instead of the opening. The technician checks the gap and alignment, adjusts the door and strike, and only then decides if the lock body needs work.

Cylinders and cams

When the key is stiff or won't turn, the cylinder or its cam is usually the problem. A worn cylinder can be repinned or replaced, and the cam has to match the lock body exactly. When a tenant leaves, the storefront cylinder can be rekeyed so old keys stop working without replacing the lock.

Why authorization comes first

A storefront lock is your main line of security, so authorized access verification, confirming the person requesting the work has legal authority over the property, is completed before any tool touches the door. Property management credentials, a business name matching the lease, and a matching photo ID.

That combination, the door checked with the lock and only worn parts replaced, is what keeps a storefront lock repair from turning into a repeat call.

Property managers can rekey storefronts between tenants.

New tenant, new keys, same lock, usually on the same visit.

Property managers turn over storefronts in strip centers and mixed-use buildings regularly. Every outgoing tenant may have handed out keys you'll never get back, and every incoming tenant needs to know they're the only ones with access.

Here is how we handle it. When you call, our dispatcher takes the address, the unit and what's needed: a repair, a rekey for a new tenant, or both. The technician checks the lock and door, rekeys or replaces the cylinder, and hands the new keys to the authorized contact.

Rekeying the storefront cylinder makes every old key useless without replacing the lock.

If you manage multiple commercial properties across Dallas, strip centers, office suites or mixed-use spaces, we can note your account in our dispatch system. That speeds up verification on repeat calls.

No commercial contract required. No minimum call volume. New keys only to the authorized contact.

  1. Step 1

    Call and describe the lock

Call 469-300-5525. Our dispatcher takes your address and asks what the lock is doing: key won't turn, bolt won't throw, or the door won't latch. Describe the door, glass in an aluminum frame, single or pair, and what's on the inside. That tells us which parts to bring.

  2. Step 2

    On site check and authorization

When the technician arrives, authorized access verification happens first, with your photo ID and a property management agreement, business license or commercial lease. Then the cylinder, cam, lock body, strike, pivots and door alignment are checked to find the real cause.

  3. Step 3

    Repair, rekey or replace

Many problems are fixed by realigning the door and strike or replacing a worn cylinder or cam. If the lock body is worn out, we explain the replacement options first. If you need new keys, the cylinder can be rekeyed on the same visit.

  4. Step 4

    Key, bolt and latch test

Before the technician leaves, the door is locked and unlocked from both sides several times. The key has to turn smoothly, the bolt has to throw fully into the frame, and the inside release has to work without a key. If the door closer or pivots need attention, we tell you on the spot.

Storefront door lock questions we hear most.

Why won't my storefront key turn?

A key that won't turn is usually a worn or dirty cylinder, a worn key, or a cylinder that has loosened and rotated in the door. It can also be the door pressing on the bolt because it's out of alignment. Don't force it, a snapped key makes the repair harder. Call 469-300-5525 and we'll check the cylinder and the door.

Why won't my storefront lock bolt lock?

The most common cause is a door that has sagged so the bolt hits the frame instead of the strike opening. A worn or mismatched cam, a damaged lock body, or a bent strike can also stop the bolt. We check alignment first, then the cylinder, cam and lock body.

Can a storefront lock be rekeyed instead of replaced?

Yes. Storefront key cylinders can be rekeyed so old keys stop working, without replacing the lock body. This is the usual approach when a tenant or employee leaves. If the cylinder is badly worn, replacing just the cylinder is still cheaper than a whole new lock.

Can I have a keyed lock on both sides of my storefront door?

Fire and building codes generally require that people inside can leave without a key. Some main entrance doors in certain occupancies may be key-locked from inside with specific conditions, such as a sign stating the door stays unlocked while the building is occupied. Check with your fire marshal before changing to a key-on-both-sides setup.

How much does storefront door lock repair cost?

Cost depends on what's failing. Realigning a door and strike or rekeying a cylinder costs far less than replacing a lock body. Parts, the door type and time of day also affect the final price. Call 469-300-5525 with your door details for a quote.

Do property managers need a contract to have storefront locks serviced at multiple properties?

No contract is required. Property managers can call as needed across multiple Dallas area locations. Dispatch can note your account information to speed up the authorization verification step on repeat calls. No retainer, no minimum call volume.
