Locksmith FAQ

The questions we answer on the phone every day, written down: how fast, how much, who shows up, and which DFW cities we drive to.

We get the same questions every day before a single wrench turns. How much? How fast? Are you actually local? These are fair questions in an industry full of bad actors. This page answers them straight, with no hedging and no marketing language. It is what you would want to know before you call.

Calling and scheduling

What a call sounds like, what we ask for, and how long the work takes once a technician is at your door.

Can I get same-day service, or do I need to schedule in advance?

Same-day service is available for most non-emergency calls across the DFW service area. Emergency lockouts (car, home or commercial) are dispatched immediately without a scheduled appointment. For non-urgent work like rekeying or lock installation, same-day slots fill faster on weekdays than weekends, so calling early improves availability. Same-day locksmith service means the appointment is booked and completed within the same calendar day, which is different from emergency dispatch.

What information should I have ready when I call?

Three things speed up every call: your exact location or address, the type of service you need, and for automotive calls, the year, make and model of the vehicle. For residential or commercial calls, knowing whether the door has a deadbolt, knob lock or keypad helps the dispatcher confirm the right tools go on the truck. You do not need to know the brand of your lock.

How long does a typical locksmith appointment take?

Most single-door residential lockouts take 15 to 30 minutes on site once the technician arrives. Rekeying one lock takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes. A full exterior rekey for a standard home runs 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of doors. Car key programming varies by vehicle make and programming method: simple fob replacements often finish in under 20 minutes, while all-keys-lost programming on newer vehicles takes longer. Appointment duration describes only on-site time, not travel time to your location.

Payment and pricing

What you pay with, and what happens to the number you were given on the phone.

Before work begins

Ask "is this the final price?" before the technician starts. Any adjustment should be explained first, not added to the invoice after.

Variables that affect a total (time of day, vehicle make, lock type, programming requirements) get explained on the call, before anyone is dispatched.

Do you accept credit cards, or is it cash only?

Fast Local Locksmith accepts major credit cards. Cash-only requirements are a documented red flag in the locksmith industry. They are associated with bait-and-switch operators who avoid traceable payment records. Paying by card creates a receipt you can dispute if anything goes wrong. Ask about payment methods before any technician arrives, not after.

Will the price quoted over the phone change when the technician arrives?

The price should not change unless the job itself is different from what was described on the call. If the technician discovers a damaged lock, an all-keys-lost vehicle scenario or a door type that requires different tools, any adjustment should be explained before work begins, not added to the invoice after. Asking "is this the final price?" before the technician starts is a reasonable and standard question.

Who is at your door

Dallas has a locksmith scam problem. Customers are cautious, and they should be. These answers cover how to check the person and the company before work begins.

Read about Texas locksmith licensing
Is Fast Local Locksmith a local Dallas business or a national call center?

Fast Local Locksmith LLC is a registered Texas business, not a national directory or call center. Dispatchers route calls within the DFW service area, not from a central office in another state re-routing to whoever is available. You can verify the business on Google at the active listing linked on this site. A contractor dispatch model, where a national call center sends third-party contractors, is the pattern this company does not use.

How do I verify that the technician showing up is legitimate?

Ask for a photo ID and proof of licensure before work begins. Texas law requires a locksmith to carry credentials on site. A legitimate technician will produce them without hesitation. You can also check a company's status independently by searching the Texas DPS Private Security Bureau's online database, which is free and publicly accessible. Proof of licensure is the physical or digital credential a technician must carry during every job in Texas.

What proof do I need to show for a home or car lockout?

For a residential lockout, a photo ID matching the address is the standard request. For a vehicle lockout, a vehicle registration or title confirming your name is typical. Renters may be asked for a lease agreement. This is standard practice, because a locksmith who opens a door without verifying identity has no way to confirm the person requesting access has the legal right to it. No legitimate locksmith should resist this step.

How do I know the Google reviews for Fast Local Locksmith are real?

Check the review profiles directly, because real reviews name a specific service, location or situation. Generic reviews with no detail are the pattern associated with fabricated profiles. The Fast Local Locksmith Google Business Profile is publicly accessible. Review fraud in the locksmith industry is documented, so the best check is reading the actual text.

Do you handle both residential and commercial locksmith jobs, or just one?

Both residential and commercial jobs are covered under one dispatch. That includes home lockouts, car lockouts, office lockouts, rekeying, lock installation, safe opening and commercial door hardware service. There is no need to call a separate provider based on the type of property. Commercial locksmith scope covers the full range of business lock needs: lockouts, master key systems, rekeying after employee changes, and access control.

Can you service newer vehicles with push-to-start systems or European brands?

Most late-model domestic and import vehicles, including push-to-start systems and European brands, are within the service scope. Confirm your vehicle's year, make and model when you call. A small number of high-security luxury vehicles require OEM-only programming that only a franchised dealership can perform. If your vehicle falls into that category, the dispatcher will tell you on the call rather than send a technician who cannot complete the job. Proximity key systems on push-to-start vehicles need programming equipment specific to that vehicle's frequency and ECU protocol.

A key broke off inside my lock or ignition. What should I do first?

Stop turning the lock. Additional rotation drives the fragment deeper and makes extraction harder. Do not attempt to remove it with tweezers, glue or a bobby pin, because these methods damage the cylinder. Call a locksmith and describe exactly where the key broke: inside the door lock, inside the ignition, or at the keyway entry point. That detail determines which extraction tool the technician brings. Broken key extraction is a non-destructive removal process that preserves the cylinder if no prior DIY attempts have damaged it.

My home was just broken into. What should I do before calling a locksmith?

Call 911 first. Do not enter the property until police have cleared it. Once the scene is documented and safe, a locksmith can assess which locks were compromised and replace or re-secure them the same day in most cases. Have the police report number ready, because some insurance claims require it and a legitimate locksmith may ask for it before working on a recently forced door. Re-securing after a break-in covers emergency lock replacement on compromised entry points, not cosmetic door repair.

What is the best way to leave a review after my appointment?

Google is the most useful platform, because reviews there show up on the business's public profile and help other DFW residents check the service before calling. Go to the Fast Local Locksmith Google Business Profile, click "Write a review," and describe the specific service, location and outcome. Specific details (what type of lockout, how long it took, whether the technician explained the process) are more useful to people reading before they call than a rating alone.
