These are honest working ranges. Your specific number depends on the variables explained throughout this page. Read the section on variable pricing factors: the set of conditions like time of day, vehicle type, lock count and hardware grade that cause a locksmith price to shift between jobs.

Why Dallas pricing has more variables than most cities

DFW geography and the local vehicle market create pricing factors that do not exist in smaller markets.

The metro covers roughly 9,000 square miles. A locksmith handling a call in Prosper at 9 PM is in a different situation than one handling a call in downtown Dallas at noon. Neither is the technician pulling up to a 2024 Mercedes GLE in Southlake versus a 2009 Ford F-150 in Garland.

Dallas also has one of the highest concentrations of newer vehicles in Texas. Push to start key fobs and advanced transponder systems are now standard across most model years. A transponder key is a car key with a microchip inside that must be synced to your vehicle's immobilizer before the car will start. Those systems require specialized programming equipment, and that equipment adds real cost.

The sprawl matters too. Fast Local Locksmith dispatches across the full DFW service area with no zone surcharges applied within the metro. The price you get for a rekey in Richardson is the same structure as one in Arlington.

How a real quote unfolded for a Frisco customer

One call and two questions revealed the full price, before a single technician moved.

A locksmith's hands working on a disassembled brass deadbolt cylinder on a cloth-covered kitchen counter, with a pin kit tray and plug follower tool laid out nearby, and an out-of-focus front door visible in the background.

Dispatch slip

Two keyways means two pin kits, so the quote covered two setups. Said on the call, not at the door.

A rekey changes the pins inside the lock you already own, so the old key stops working.

A homeowner in Frisco called after buying a resale property in one of the newer subdivisions off the Dallas North Tollway. She wanted four exterior locks rekeyed and asked for a price. The first thing we asked: what brand are the locks and are all four on the same keyway?

She checked. Three Schlage B-series deadbolts. One Kwikset knob on the side entry. Different keyways.

That detail matters. Rekeying four locks on a matching keyway means one pin kit, one setup. Mixing brands means two separate pin kits and two separate calibrations. It is not dramatically more, but it is a real difference, and she deserved to know before we arrived.

We quoted her the service call fee (a base charge that covers the technician's travel to her location) plus a per lock rate for each of the four. We explained that the Kwikset and Schlage work independently, so the total reflected two setups. Final price matched the phone quote exactly. No adjustments on site.

That is how a transparent quote works. You hear the number before anyone shows up. You understand what is in it. You make an informed decision.

Have these three ready

Where you are, what is locked, and the year, make and model if it is a car. With those three answers we can quote the job on the phone.

The service call fee is real, and here is why it is fair

A service call fee covers travel, equipment and guaranteed arrival.

The service call fee (the base charge applied when a technician travels to your location, separate from the service itself) surprises some customers. It should not. A locksmith dispatching to your address in Mesquite or Denton is burning fuel, time, and bringing hundreds of dollars in specialized equipment to the job.

Any locksmith who does not charge a service call fee is folding that cost somewhere else, usually into an inflated flat rate or an on site upcharge. We break it out separately so you can see it.

When you call Fast Local Locksmith, we tell you the service call fee, tell you what the service itself costs, and explain which variables apply to your specific job. The total you hear over the phone is the total you pay. That is the commitment.

How we build a quote at Fast Local Locksmith

Every quote follows the same structure: transparent, variable based, and confirmed before dispatch.

Five things get settled on the call, in this order.

  1. Step 1

    Service type identification

Car lockout, rekey, key programming or commercial job. Each has its own baseline.

  2. Step 2

    Vehicle or hardware specifics

Make, model and year for automotive. Lock brand and count for residential or commercial.

  3. Step 3

    Time of day confirmation

After hours rates are a legitimate and disclosed pricing variable. We flag them on the call, not at the door.

  4. Step 4

    Programming fee disclosure

For any key or fob job, we separate the key blank cost from the programming fee (the charge for syncing a new key or fob to your vehicle's immobilizer) so you see the full number.

  5. Step 5

    Lock grade assessment

For installation or replacement jobs, we ask about your current hardware. Lock grade (the ANSI or BHMA rating, where Grade 1 is commercial strength and Grade 3 is builder grade) affects both parts cost and labor.

Nothing gets added at the door. If a variable changes on site (unexpected lock damage, a different lock model than described) we call it out before we proceed.

What actually moves the final number

Five variables drive almost every price difference you will see across Dallas locksmith quotes.

Understanding these before you call gives you real purchasing power.

  • 01

    Time of day

Standard daytime hours carry the base rate. Evening and weekend calls trigger an after hours rate, typically a $25 to $75 addition to the base service. This is disclosed upfront on every call.

  • 02

    Vehicle year, make and model

A 2012 Toyota Camry and a 2023 BMW 5 Series are completely different jobs. Luxury and European vehicles often require proprietary programming tools and take longer. Budget more for specialty vehicles.

  • 03

    Lock count and brand mix

More locks mean more labor and more hardware. Mixing lock brands on a single rekey job adds setup time. Ask your locksmith how they price per lock versus flat rate.

  • 04

    Hardware grade selected

If you are upgrading during a replacement job, the lock grade you choose directly affects the parts cost. A Grade 1 deadbolt costs significantly more than a builder grade Grade 3 unit, and it is worth it for exterior entry points.

  • 05

    Key programming requirements

Some keys require only cutting. Others require on board programming, dealer equivalent software access, or a two step process at the vehicle. Always ask whether the quote includes both cutting and programming as a single line item.

What to ask before you book

Getting clear answers to these five questions closes the quote versus invoice gap before it opens.
