What a safe combination change in Dallas actually involves.

A combination change does not touch the safe body. It resets where the lock expects your numbers to be.

On a mechanical dial lock, the dial turns a drive cam that picks up a stack of wheels, called the wheel pack. Each wheel has one notch cut into its edge, the gate. When the dial stops on each number in the right order, all the gates line up under the fence. The fence drops into them, the lever nose falls into the cam, and the next turn of the dial pulls the bolt back. That is the whole secret of a dial safe.

Changing the combination moves where each gate sits relative to the dial numbers. On many locks, including the common UL 768 Group 2 rated dials, that is done with a change key. With the door open, the current combination is dialed to the change index, the key goes into a small keyhole in the back of the lock and turns, which frees each wheel to be reset. The new numbers are dialed in, the key comes out, and the new combination is tested several times before anyone closes the door.

Not every dial works this way. Some entry-level and fire-rated safes ship with a combination set at the factory and no change key provision. On those, the honest options are keeping the combination or replacing the lock, and we tell you which one applies once we know the brand and model.

When it is time to change the combination.

If you cannot say for sure who knows the numbers, it is time.

Keypad code reset, door open

Many electronic safe locks ship with a factory default code printed in the manual. If nobody ever changed it, anyone holding that manual can open the safe.

  • You bought the safe or the house

A used safe, or a safe that came with a home or a business, arrives with a combination the seller, the previous owner and possibly their family already know. It may also still be on the factory setting from the day it was made.

Changing it the week you take over is the same logic as a rekey after a move. Old keys and old codes should stop working the day ownership changes.

  • An employee or manager left

Drop safes and office safes are often shared by several people. When someone with the combination leaves, the combination should change that week, whether they left on good terms or not.

On an electronic lock with user codes, the manager code can often delete or replace one person's code without changing everyone else's. On a dial lock, everyone gets the new combination.

  • The code got shared

A house sitter, a contractor, a relative, or a code written on tape inside a drawer. Once a combination has been out of your hands, assume it is still out there.

This is also the right moment to stop using birthdays, addresses and simple sequences that someone close to you could guess.

Dial or keypad, the change goes wrong in the same place.

A combination changed by mistake is a lockout you created yourself.

Electronic keypad locks are easier to change, and that is the trap. Most have a manager or master code that can add, change and delete user codes, and user codes that only open the safe. Enter a new code with a typo at the confirm step, or change the wrong user slot, and the code you think works is not the one stored in the lock.

Wrong entries add a second problem. After a set number of bad codes, many keypads go into a penalty lockout and ignore every key press for a fixed period. On one common commercial lock it is 15 minutes after four wrong codes, and pulling the battery does not reset it. Batteries matter too: a weak battery can drop out in the middle of a code change, and many locks warn about low power only shortly before they stop opening.

Dial locks fail differently. Dialing to the opening index instead of the change index, a change key that is not fully seated, or a new number in a range the manufacturer warns against can all leave a combination nobody knows. That is why every change we make happens with the door open and gets tested several times before it closes.

Already locked out after a change? Do not keep guessing.

Repeated wrong entries can stretch a keypad penalty and do not help on a dial. Call us and see our safe opening service, which starts with non-destructive methods.

  1. Step 1

    The call

We ask where the safe is, whether it has a dial or a keypad, the brand if you can see it, and whether the door is open with the current combination known. We work on most common residential and commercial safe brands; tell us the brand on the call. If the door is shut and the combination is lost, this becomes a safe opening job first.

  2. Step 2

    On site, door open

Proof of ownership is checked before anything is touched. Then the technician changes the dial combination with the change key, resets the manager and user codes on a keypad, or swaps a failed keypad or lock. On a keypad, a fresh battery goes in first so power cannot drop out mid change.

  3. Step 3

    Test and hand over

The new combination is run several times with the door open while the bolts are watched. Only then does the door close and open once more on the new numbers. You choose and keep the new combination, and you hear how to keep the lock and battery healthy.

Safe combination questions we hear most.

How much does a safe combination change in Dallas cost?

It depends on the job. Changing a dial combination with a change key, or resetting keypad codes, is the simplest version. Replacing a failed keypad or converting a dial to an electronic lock adds the cost of the new lock. After hours calls can add to the base price. If the safe is already locked and has to be opened first, that is a safe opening job, which our cost guide lists at $150 to $400 for residential safes. Call 469-300-5525 with the brand and lock type for a quote.

Can you change the combination if I do not know the current one?

If the door is open, often yes. Many dial locks can be serviced with the door open to set a new combination, and on many keypads the manager code or the manufacturer's reset procedure handles it. If the door is shut and nobody knows the combination, the safe has to be opened first, which is our safe opening service.

Can I change my safe combination myself?

Many owners can, using the manufacturer's instructions, a change key for a dial lock or the manager code for a keypad. The risk is a mistake that leaves a combination nobody knows. If you do it yourself, keep the door open, use a fresh battery on a keypad, and test the new combination several times before closing the door.

Why will my keypad not respond after a few wrong codes?

Many electronic safe locks go into a penalty lockout after several wrong entries and ignore key presses for a set time. On one common commercial lock it is 15 minutes after four wrong codes, and removing the battery does not reset it. Wait it out, then enter the code slowly. If the code still fails, call us before more wrong entries add to the delay.

Can a dial safe be converted to an electronic keypad?

Often, yes. Many safe doors use a standard lock mounting, so a dial lock can be swapped for an electronic keypad lock. It depends on the door, the spindle hole and the lock body, so we confirm it from the brand and model before the visit. We work on most common residential and commercial safe brands; tell us the brand on the call.

What do I need to show before you change a combination?

Proof of ownership is required. Have your ID and something that shows the safe is yours or that you are authorized for the business that owns it. We do not change a combination or code without it.
