Unit rekeys keep Dallas rentals secure between every tenant.
An apartment rekey changes the pins inside a unit's existing locks so the previous tenant's keys stop working and only the new keys open the door.
- Day 0The tenant moves out.
- Day 7Texas deadline to rekey the unit.
- Move inNew keys that no former tenant has.
Texas Property Code Section 92.156 requires landlords to rekey security devices operated by a key, card or combination within seven days after each tenant turnover, at the landlord's expense. Former tenants, their roommates and anyone they lent a key to shouldn't still have a way in.
Fast Local Locksmith rekeys apartment and rental units across Dallas for property managers, apartment communities and landlords. We rekey each unit's deadbolt and entry lock, keep your management master key working, test every key, and record which unit got which new key.

Dallas rental units usually have three things to rekey.
Every keyed device on the unit's exterior door gets the new combination.
Here is what many owners don't realize about unit turnovers. Rekeying only the deadbolt leaves the entry lock opening with the old key, and rekeying a unit off the master system means management can't get in for maintenance. Each keyed lock on the unit's exterior door gets rekeyed together, to a new combination that still fits the property's key system.
We rekey units at apartment communities and rental properties across Dallas, from Uptown and Lake Highlands to complexes in Garland, Irving, Mesquite and Grand Prairie, without a minimum commercial contract requirement.
Texas law also sets the security devices a rental unit must have, including a keyed deadbolt on each exterior door. Most DFW apartment units have a keyed deadbolt and a keyed knob or lever set on the entry door. Communities that use a master key system need every unit rekeyed so the management master keeps working, while the new tenant's key opens only their own unit.

What it actually looks like when we rekey a unit between tenants.
Every unit rekey starts with two questions: when the tenant moved out, and how the property is keyed.

- LocksDeadbolt and lever, property keywayChecked
- Swapping cylindersMoving old cylinders between units, so old keys still work somewhereNever

What makes the difference between a turnover that's actually secure and one that only looks that way comes down to a truly new key combination for each unit, and keeping a record of what was issued.
How a rekey works
Inside each lock cylinder is a row of small pins cut to match one key. Rekeying swaps those pins for a new set, so the lock now matches a new key. The lock, the door and the hardware all stay the same. The old key no longer lines the pins up and won't turn.
Master keys keep working
On a master keyed property, each unit's new pin set is chosen so the management master key still opens it. Any rekeying tied to the landlord's master key is the landlord's cost under the same statute. We record the unit, the date and the new key code for your files.
Why authorization comes first
New unit keys go only to the property, so authorized access verification, confirming the person requesting the work has legal authority over the property, is completed before any lock is touched. Property management credentials, the property name on the agreement, and a matching photo ID.
That combination, a truly new combination per unit and a record of every key issued, is what makes a turnover secure instead of just looking that way.
Call 469-300-5525Property managers can batch turnovers into one visit.
Several units, one trip, one record of every new key.
Apartment communities turn over units every week. Scheduling a locksmith for each one, chasing keys and tracking which unit has which code eats into the make-ready window.
Here is how we handle it. Send the list of units and move-out dates. The technician rekeys each unit's deadbolt and entry lock on one visit, tests the new keys and the management master, and hands the labeled keys to the authorized contact with a list of units and key codes.
One visit can cover every unit turning over that week, with a written record for your files.
If you manage multiple rental properties across Dallas, apartment communities, duplexes or mixed-use buildings, we can note your account in our dispatch system. That speeds up verification on every turnover call.

Rekeyed- Step 1
Send the unit list
Call or text 469-300-5525 with the property address, the units turning over and their move-out dates. Tell us the lock brand if you know it and whether the property uses a master key, so the right pins and keys come with the technician.
- Step 2
Authorization and key plan
Authorized access verification happens first, with your photo ID and the property management agreement. We confirm the keying plan: a new unique combination per unit, set to work with your management master if you have one.
- Step 3
Rekey every keyed lock
The deadbolt and entry lock on each unit are rekeyed to the new combination. Worn or damaged locks are pointed out and replaced only with your OK. The doors stay usable for your make-ready crew throughout.
- Step 4
Test, label and record
Before the technician leaves, each unit is tested with the old key, the new keys and the management master. New keys are labeled by unit and handed to the authorized contact with a record of units, dates and key codes.

Apartment and unit rekey questions we hear most.
How soon does a Texas landlord have to rekey after a tenant moves out?
Texas Property Code Section 92.156 requires a landlord to rekey security devices operated by a key, card or combination no later than the seventh day after each tenant turnover, at the landlord's expense. This is general information, not legal advice. Check the current statute or your attorney for your situation.
Is rekeying a unit the same as changing the locks?
No. Rekeying changes the pins inside the existing locks so old keys stop working, while the hardware stays on the door. Changing locks replaces the hardware. Rekeying is usually faster and costs less, and is the normal approach for tenant turnovers.
Will our management master key still work after a rekey?
Yes, when the property uses a master key system. Each unit's new combination is set so your management master still opens it, while the new tenant's key opens only their unit. We test the master on every unit before leaving.
Can a tenant ask for a rekey during their lease?
Under the same Texas statute, a tenant can ask the landlord to rekey or change locks during the lease, and the landlord may charge the tenant for those extra requests. The landlord pays for the required rekey after each turnover and for rekeying tied to the landlord's master key.
How much does an apartment rekey cost per unit?
Cost depends on how many locks each unit has, the lock brand, whether the property is master keyed, and how many units are done on one visit. Batching several turnovers into one trip lowers the cost per unit. Call 469-300-5525 with your unit list for a quote.
Do property managers need a contract for unit rekeys at multiple properties?
No contract is required. Property managers can call as needed across multiple Dallas area properties. Dispatch can note your account information to speed up the authorization verification step on every turnover call. No retainer, no minimum call volume.
