Lock replacement solves what rekeying can't: worn hardware, failed latches, outdated grades.
Rekeying changes who holds a working key. It does nothing for a lock that's already failing mechanically. If your deadbolt (the bolt-style lock that throws into the door frame) sticks on the way out, the cylinder feels loose, or the latch doesn't seat cleanly, you're dealing with hardware failure. A new key won't fix that.
Residential lock replacement means removing the existing lock entirely and installing a new unit that fits your door's existing prep, the pre-cut hole dimensions already in the door. You don't need a new door. You don't need extra drilling. You need a lock that matches your backset, which is the horizontal distance from the door's edge to the center of the lock bore. Standard residential backsets are 2⅜" or 2¾". We measure before we order, so the hardware fits right the first time.
Fast Local Locksmith handles deadbolt installation, door knob replacement (swapping a worn or damaged knob while retaining or upgrading the keyed cylinder) and full lock set upgrades across Dallas.
Call 469-300-5525Most Dallas homes built in the 1990s and 2000s shipped with the weakest locks legally allowed.
Here's what most homeowners don't realize about that original lock on the door.
ANSI/BHMA lock grade
- Grade 1Strongest
- Grade 2
- Grade 3Builder
The ANSI/BHMA lock grade, a standardized rating system where Grade 1 is the strongest and Grade 3 is the lightest duty, tells you exactly how much punishment a lock was designed to handle. Grade 3 hardware meets minimum code and costs builders almost nothing. It was never meant to last 20 years.
Neighborhoods in east Dallas, north Dallas, and through the Oak Cliff corridor are full of housing stock from that era. The locks on those doors have been cycled thousands of times. The latch sticks in summer humidity. The deadbolt throw, the bolt itself, becomes inconsistent. The cylinder wobbles.
- Dallas summers make it worse.Repeated expansion and contraction from 105°F heat cycles warp door frames subtly over time.
- A lock that fit precisely in 2002 may bind against a shifted frame. That's not a rekey problem. That's a replacement call.
Grade 3 hardware fails in predictable ways, and the fix is straightforward once you know what to look for.
We get called to Dallas homes for lock replacements more often than any other single job.
The strike plate fix
3/4 inch versus 3 inch screws
A reinforced strike plate with 3" screws was installed, screws that bite into the door frame stud rather than just the jamb wood.
The story is almost always the same. The homeowner noticed the deadbolt getting stiff six months ago. Then the key started sticking. Then one afternoon the bolt wouldn't throw all the way.
A recent job near White Rock Lake
A neighborhood with a lot of mid-90s construction. The front door had original builder hardware: Grade 3 knob lock, Grade 3 deadbolt. The knob cylinder had so much play in it that it could be wiggled with two fingers. The strike plate (the metal plate recessed into the door frame where the bolt seats) was the original builder installation with short ¾" screws.
Both locks were replaced with Schlage Grade 1 units matched to the existing 2⅜" backset. A reinforced strike plate with 3" screws was installed, screws that bite into the door frame stud rather than just the jamb wood. Both doors were done in about 45 minutes.
Kwikset vs. Schlage
Kwikset uses a smaller pin format and is slightly easier to rekey. Schlage uses a larger diameter cylinder with a different keyway design that's generally harder to pick and bump. Both are solid brands. The difference is in the cylinder tolerance and the overall casting weight.
For a front door facing a public street, Schlage Grade 1 is the stronger call. For interior or secondary doors, Kwikset Grade 2 often does the job well.
The ANSI/BHMA lock grade on builder hardware is Grade 3 for one reason: cost. Grade 1 hardware runs roughly three times as much per door. On a large housing development, that adds up fast, and the homeowner ends up with Grade 3 hardware as a result.
Call 469-300-5525We confirm your door prep dimensions before the job so we show up with the right lock in the truck.
Will a replacement lock actually fit your door? It's a fair question.
Lock bores, backsets, and door thicknesses vary. Installing the wrong lock means gaps, misaligned strikes, or a cylinder that doesn't seat flush with the door face.
Here's how we handle it. When you call, we ask a few quick questions: door thickness, whether you have a single or double cylinder setup, and the approximate age and brand of the existing hardware. That's usually enough to load the truck with the right options.
When the technician arrives, we confirm the backset measurement on site before anything comes off the door. If something doesn't match what was described, we have options in the vehicle. We don't order locks and disappear to the hardware store mid-job.

Diagnostic and removal
The technician inspects the existing lock, confirms the ANSI/BHMA lock grade of what's being removed, and measures the backset and bore diameter. The existing hardware is removed cleanly without scoring the door face.
- Step 2
Hardware selection and fit check
The replacement lock is matched to the confirmed door prep dimensions. We dry-fit the unit before final installation to confirm alignment with the existing strike plate location. If the strike plate needs repositioning, common when frames have shifted, that's handled before the new lock seats.
- Step 3
Installation and testing
The new lock is installed, the strike plate is secured with structural screws, and the latch and deadbolt throw are tested through a full open-and-close cycle. We walk the homeowner through the feel of the new hardware before closing the job. If anything feels off, we adjust before leaving.

Lock replacement questions we hear most.
How much does residential lock replacement cost compared to just rekeying?
Lock replacement costs more than rekeying because new hardware is involved. Rekeying changes only the internal pins and uses your existing lock body. Replacement makes sense when the cylinder is worn, the latch sticks, or you're upgrading from Grade 3 builder hardware. The added cost buys you a new Grade 1 or Grade 2 lock with a fresh cylinder and reinforced strike plate installation.
My deadbolt still turns, why would I need to replace it?
A lock that turns is not the same as a lock that secures. If the bolt throw is inconsistent, the cylinder wobbles, or the latch doesn't seat cleanly, the mechanism is failing. Dallas heat cycles cause door frames to shift slightly over decades. That frame shift can leave a bolt that appears to engage but no longer fully seats in the strike plate.
How long does a full lock replacement take per door?
One exterior door typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. That includes removing the old hardware, confirming the backset measurement, fitting the new lock, and installing a reinforced strike plate. A standard two-door home is usually finished in under 90 minutes. We test both the latch and the deadbolt throw before closing the job.
What lock brands do you carry, and can I request a specific one?
Schlage and Kwikset Grade 1 options are stocked for most standard residential door preps. Yes, you can request a specific brand when you call. Schlage uses a larger cylinder diameter that resists picking and bumping better. Kwikset is slightly easier to rekey later if needed. We'll explain the trade-offs so you choose with confidence.
Will my existing door need extra drilling for a new lock?
No extra drilling is needed in most cases. Replacement locks are matched to your door's existing prep, the bore diameter and backset already cut into the door. We confirm those dimensions before arriving so the hardware fits without modification. The new lock seats in the same location as the old one.
Do I need to buy the hardware myself before you arrive?
Don't purchase hardware ahead of time. Buying the wrong backset size or bore diameter is a common mistake. We bring Schlage and Kwikset options in the truck, confirm your door dimensions on site, and install matched hardware in one visit. That eliminates a return trip and guarantees the lock fits correctly the first time.
Ready to replace that lock?
A worn lock is a solved problem. We bring the hardware and handle the installation the same day.
