A master key system puts every door in Dallas on one plan.

A master key system lets each person carry one key that opens their own doors, while a master key opens all of them.

  1. OwnerOne key opens every door in the building.
  2. ManagerOffices and storage, nothing else.
  3. StaffThe front entry and their own workspace.

Without a system, businesses end up with a drawer of loose keys, a ring nobody can identify, and no clear answer to who can open what. Every lost key becomes a guessing game about which locks need changing.

Fast Local Locksmith designs and installs master key systems across Dallas for business owners, office managers and property managers. We walk the property, draw up a key chart, rekey the cylinders to match it, and cut a labeled key set for each access level.

One plan. Every key accounted for.

Dallas businesses need different access levels for different people.

The structure of the system decides who can open what, so it gets planned first.

Here is what most business owners don't realize about master keying. The system is a hierarchy, not just a single key that opens everything. At the top sits the grand master. Under it, master keys open groups of doors. At the bottom, change keys open one door or one set of doors only.

We set up systems at commercial addresses across Dallas, from Uptown office suites to retail centers in Garland, Mesquite and Grand Prairie, without a minimum commercial contract requirement. The number of levels follows how your business actually runs, not a template.

DFW's commercial properties rarely have one layout. A multi-tenant office building may need a building master for management, a master per suite for each tenant, and change keys for individual offices. A retail store may only need two levels: the owner and the staff. A warehouse may split dock doors, offices and the cage room into separate groups so each crew only carries what it uses.

  • Grand master key.

Opens every lock in the system. Held by the owner or property manager.

  • Master keys.

Open one group of doors: a floor, a suite or a department.

  • Change keys.

Open a single door or set. Issued to staff and individual tenants.

What it actually looks like when we set up a master key system.

Every master key job starts with two questions: how many doors, and who needs which ones.

What makes the difference between a system that works for years and one that turns into a mess comes down to planning the hierarchy before cutting keys, and keeping a record of what was built.

Door count first

A typical office suite has more locks than people expect: the main entry, private offices, the supply closet, the server or records room and sometimes a rear exit. The technician walks every door and lists the lock brand, keyway and condition before anything is designed.

Building the key chart

The key chart is the plan for the whole system. It shows each key level and exactly which doors it opens. A sensitive room like a server closet can be kept off the general master so only the people who need it carry that key.

Planning room for growth matters too. A chart built with spare capacity lets you add a new office or a new tenant later without rekeying the whole building.

Why authorization comes first

A master key opens a lot of doors, so authorized access verification, confirming the person requesting the work has legal authority over the property, is completed before any cylinder is touched. Property management credentials, a business name matching the lease, and a matching photo ID.

That combination, a written plan and a verified owner, is what keeps a master key system under your control instead of becoming another set of loose keys.

Property managers keep control of every key that is cut.

A master key is only as secure as the record of who holds it.

Property managers juggle tenant changeovers, maintenance staff and vendors across multiple buildings. You need to know which keys exist, who holds them, and what happens when one goes missing.

Here is how we handle it. The key chart stays on file with the person authorized on the account. Keys are stamped with a code that identifies their level without spelling out which doors they open. Additional keys are only cut on request from the authorized contact.

If a change key is lost, only the doors that key opens need rekeying. The rest of the system stays as it is.

If you manage multiple commercial properties across Dallas, strip centers, office suites or mixed-use spaces, we can note your account in our dispatch system. That speeds up verification when you need a new tenant keyed in or a lost key handled.

  1. Step 1

    Call and walkthrough

Call 469-300-5525. Our dispatcher takes your address, a rough door count and how many people need keys. A technician visits to walk every door and record the lock brand, keyway and condition. That tells us which cylinders can be repinned and which need replacing.

  2. Step 2

    Key chart and approval

We draft the key chart: each access level, who holds it, and which doors it opens. You review it and sign off before work starts. Authorized access verification happens at this stage, with your photo ID and a property management agreement, business license or commercial lease.

  3. Step 3

    Rekeying the cylinders

Each cylinder is pinned to accept both its own change key and the master keys above it. Locks that can't join the system are replaced with compatible hardware. Work can be scheduled around your business hours so doors stay usable.

  4. Step 4

    Key cutting and full testing

Keys are cut, stamped by level and handed over in labeled sets. Before the technician leaves, every key is tried in every door it should open and every door it should not. You get the final chart for your records.

Master key system questions we hear most.

Can my existing locks be added to a master key system?

Often, yes. Many commercial cylinders can be repinned to work in a master key system as long as they share a compatible keyway and are in good condition. During the walkthrough we check every lock and tell you which ones can stay and which need replacing before any work begins.

How much does a master key system cost for a business?

Cost depends on the number of doors, how many access levels you need, whether existing cylinders can be reused, and how many keys you want cut. A small retail space with two levels costs far less than a multi-tenant building. Call 469-300-5525 for a quote based on your door count and layout.

What happens if someone loses a master key?

A lost master key affects every door it opens, so those cylinders should be rekeyed. A lost change key is simpler: only the door or doors that key opens need attention. This is one reason we keep a written key chart, so we know exactly which locks are affected and nothing more gets changed than necessary.

Is a master keyed lock less secure than a standard lock?

A master keyed cylinder accepts more than one key, which adds pinning combinations compared to a single keyed lock. For most businesses the tradeoff is worth the key control it brings. Sensitive rooms can be left off the general master, and restricted keyways can limit who is able to copy keys.

Can you add new doors or tenants to the system later?

Yes, if the system was planned with room to grow. We build the key chart with spare capacity so a new office, suite or tenant can be added without rekeying the whole building. Keep your key chart on file and call with the new door details when you're ready.

Do property managers need a contract to set up master key systems at multiple properties?

No contract is required. Property managers can call as needed across multiple Dallas area locations. Dispatch can note your account information to speed up authorization on future calls, like keying in a new tenant or replacing a lost key. No retainer, no minimum call volume.
