Rekeying is the fastest way to secure a new home.
Lock rekeying changes the internal pin configuration of an existing lock so old keys stop working. No new hardware, no second appointment.
New homeowner. Recent breakup. Lost key you never found. Any of these means someone out there may still have a working copy. Rekeying closes that gap immediately.
The locksmith removes the cylinder, the rotating core where your key inserts, adjusts the internal pin stack, and reinstalls it. Your existing hardware works. A new key works. The old one does not.
No drilling. No door damage. No ordering parts.

What a Dallas rekey job actually looks like.
Our technicians handle rekey calls in Dallas neighborhoods every week. Here is a typical one.

Each pin tumbler lock was disassembled, re-pinned to a new key specification, and tested.
A homeowner in Farmers Branch closed on a 1990s ranch style house on a Thursday. By Saturday morning she had called us.
The home had four exterior locks: a front door with a Kwikset deadbolt and knob, a back door with a deadbolt only, and a side entry from the garage.
All four locks were builder grade locks, lower cost hardware installed during original construction and common in that era of DFW development. Functional, but the pins were worn.
We brought a full pin kit on site. No parts needed to be ordered. Each pin tumbler lock was disassembled, re-pinned to a new key specification, and tested. The garage entry knob had a slightly loose cylinder. We noted it, explained it honestly, and let her decide. She chose to replace just that one while we were already there.
Under 45 minutes
Total time on site: under 45 minutes for all four locks plus the replacement knob. She left for errands with two matching new keys and the confidence that the old ones were dead.
That is how a rekey call should go. Fast, honest and finished in one visit.
Many older DFW homes were built during the 1980s and 1990s construction booms and use Kwikset's KW1 keyway, one of the most common keyways in North America. Rekeying these locks is straightforward. Upgrading to a Schlage keyway at the same time is an option some homeowners choose for slightly better key control.
Call 469-300-5525Rekeying vs replacing: an honest answer.
Rekeying is almost always enough. Replacement makes sense in specific situations, and we will tell you which one applies before we do anything.
Rekey
The right call when
- Your existing hardware is in good condition and fits the door properly.
- You simply need old keys deactivated, not new hardware.
- It costs less and takes less time than replacement.
Replace
Makes sense when
- The lock itself is damaged or worn beyond what rekeying can fix.
- It is a builder grade product you want to upgrade for better security.
- You want to step up to a Grade 1 deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate.
We will not recommend replacement just to increase the ticket. If rekeying handles it, that is what we will say.

Open- Step 1
Lock count and hardware confirmed before arrival
We confirm the number of locks, the hardware brand, and whether you want a keyed alike setup, where every lock in the home operates on one common key. This happens on the call and takes two minutes. When the technician arrives, they do a quick visual check on each cylinder before starting.
- Step 2
Pins set and cylinders reinstalled door by door
The cylinder is removed from each lock. The existing pin stack is cleared. New pins are set to the specification of your new key. The cylinder is reinstalled and tested, then the next lock. We work door by door and do not skip the test step.
For homes in older Dallas neighborhoods with mixed hardware brands, a Kwikset front door and a Schlage back door for example, we address each one separately. Different brands use different keyways and cannot share a key without additional work.
- Step 3
Every lock tested before we leave
Every rekeyed lock is tested with the new key and confirmed that the old key no longer operates it. You test it yourself too. We hand off your new keys and walk you through anything we noted during the job.

Rekey questions we hear most.
How much does residential lock rekeying cost compared to replacing the locks?
Rekeying costs significantly less than full lock replacement in most cases. The exact amount depends on the number of locks and the hardware brand. Homeowners who only need old keys deactivated, not new hardware, almost always save money by rekeying. We confirm whether rekeying or replacement is the right call before any work begins, so you are never sold more than you need.
How long does it take to rekey a whole house in Dallas?
Most homes with three to five exterior locks are finished in under an hour. Each lock takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes to disassemble, re-pin and test. We bring all pin kits on site, so nothing is ordered or delayed. One visit handles everything.
Will rekeying actually stop someone with an old key from getting in?
Yes. A rekeyed lock physically cannot be operated by the previous key. The internal pin configuration changes, so the old key's cuts no longer align. Key control is restored completely. No new hardware is required for this protection.
Can all my door locks be rekeyed to one single key?
Multiple locks can be rekeyed alike so one key opens every door. This is called keying alike. We confirm your hardware brands before arriving, since locks from different manufacturers, like a Kwikset front door and a Schlage back door, use different keyways and require separate handling.
How soon after moving in should I rekey my Dallas home?
Rekey before unpacking, ideally on closing day or moving day. Previous owners, contractors, cleaners and agents may hold working copies. The longer you wait, the longer unknown keys remain active. We schedule rekey appointments throughout the Dallas area.
What do I need to have ready when the technician arrives?
Have access to every door you want rekeyed, unlocked and reachable. No special prep is needed. The technician inspects each cylinder on arrival, performs the rekey, and hands you tested new keys before leaving. The whole process runs faster when all entry points are accessible from the start.
