A cut key and a programmed key are two different things.
Transponder key programming is the step that turns a blank key into one your car will actually start.
Here's what's happening inside your key. Since the mid-1990s, virtually every car made for the U.S. market has a transponder key, a key with a small microchip embedded in the plastic head. That chip communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer ECU, the engine control unit component that checks incoming key signals before allowing the fuel system and ignition to activate. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the chip, the car won't start.
A hardware store can cut the metal blade to match your door lock. What they can't do is write your vehicle's unique authorization data to that chip. That's transponder key programming, and without it, the blade is just metal.
This is why a key can fit perfectly and still leave you stranded.

The chip inside the blank must be compatible with your vehicle's system: transponder chips typically talk at 125 kHz, while remote functions run on 315 MHz or 433 MHz depending on the manufacturer.
We confirm compatibility before any work begins. No surprises.
DFW's vehicle mix makes this one of our most common calls.
More cars per household means more key sets to track.
The Dallas-Fort Worth market runs hot in more ways than one. With summer temperatures routinely hitting 105°F, a key that won't start the engine becomes urgent fast. But there's a local factor most people don't think about.
DFW has one of the highest rates of vehicle ownership per household in the country. More vehicles per family means more key sets to track, more chances for a key to get lost in a stadium parking lot or a shopping center. It also means more people buying keys online thinking a cut blade is all they need.
Compare locksmith versus dealership key service- Plano, Frisco and Southlake carry a high density of newer vehicles.Push-to-start and proximity key systems need the same programming step, with a key fob instead of a blade.
- We carry equipment for both key types.Across central Dallas zip codes and outer-metro locations in Denton, Rockwall and Mansfield.
What we see on almost every programming call.
The most common scenario isn't a lost key. It's a key that was cut but never programmed.

Our tech arrives and the customer has already bought a key blank online. Sometimes they found someone to cut it. The key slides into the ignition, turns, and nothing happens. They assume the key was cut wrong. It wasn't. The chip inside was never touched.
When we get to the vehicle, the first step is confirming which immobilizer system we're dealing with. That tells us which of three programming methods applies, and we carry equipment that handles the full range of domestic and import vehicles.
Every job ends the same way: the customer drives off.

OBD-II port programming
Used on most modern vehicles. Equipment connects to the onboard diagnostics port and writes the key data directly to the ECU. Usually the quickest method.
- 02
Ignition-based programming
A timed ignition cycle sequence that uses the car's existing memory to add a new key without an external connection. Used when the vehicle's system calls for it.
- 03
EEPROM programming
Reads and writes directly to the vehicle's memory chip. Reserved for all-keys-lost scenarios, where no working programmed key remains. More involved, but fully solvable on site for most makes and model years.
We come to your vehicle. No tow, no appointment.
On-site programming means no waiting room required.
A dealership visit for transponder key programming typically requires scheduling days in advance. Then you either drive an unprogrammed key there, which doesn't start the car, or you arrange a tow. That's time and towing fees on top of the service wait.
We program on site at your vehicle's current location across DFW. Whether you're in a parking garage in Uptown Dallas, a driveway in McKinney, or a lot near DFW Airport in Irving, our equipment comes to you. Most programming appointments, when a key blank is already available, are completed in under an hour.

Checklist
A consistent verification process from start to finish.
- Confirm vehicle details before arriving.Year, make, model and existing key count collected during the call, not on site.
- Identify the correct chip type and frequency.Matched to the specific immobilizer system before work begins.
- Select the right programming method.OBD-II port, ignition-based, or EEPROM, whichever fits the vehicle.
- Verify ECU recognition before declaring the job complete. The key is programmed and confirmed, not just handed over.
- Test-start the vehicle multiple times. To confirm a consistent immobilizer response.
- Confirm all existing keys still work. After the new key has been added to the system.

What diagnostics tell us first
We start by identifying the immobilizer system. This tells us which programming method applies and what chip blank the new key requires. For all-keys-lost scenarios, we also confirm whether the ECU will need a security bypass before a new primary key can be enrolled.
- Step 2
How we program the key
Once we have the right blank and confirmed the method, programming begins. OBD-II and ignition-based programming are non-invasive and leave the vehicle's existing system intact. EEPROM work is reserved for situations where those paths aren't available.
- Step 3
Before we leave
We test-start the vehicle a minimum of three times. We also verify that any existing programmed keys still work. The job isn't done until the car starts reliably and every key on the account is confirmed functional.

Transponder key programming questions we hear most.
Why does my car need transponder key programming if the blade already fits the lock?
Modern vehicles use an immobilizer ECU that checks for an authorized chip signal before allowing the engine to start. A cut blade matches the lock mechanically, but without programming, the chip inside is blank. The immobilizer blocks the fuel system entirely. Programming writes your vehicle's unique authorization data to that chip so the engine recognizes the key as valid.
How much does transponder key programming cost compared to a dealership visit?
Dealership programming typically adds scheduling delays, a potential tow fee, and higher labor rates to the key cost. On-site programming from Fast Local Locksmith eliminates towing and waiting room time entirely. Exact pricing varies by vehicle make, model year, and programming method required. Call 469-300-5525 with your vehicle details for a confirmed quote before we dispatch.
What happens if I've lost every key to my vehicle, can you still program a new one?
Yes. An all-keys-lost scenario requires a more involved process, but it's fully solvable on site for most makes and model years. When no working programmed key remains, we use EEPROM programming to establish a new primary key directly through the vehicle's memory chip. This takes longer than a standard add-a-key appointment but does not require a tow or dealership visit.
How long does an on-site transponder programming appointment take?
Most standard programming appointments complete in under one hour when a compatible key blank is already available. All-keys-lost scenarios take longer due to the EEPROM process. We confirm your vehicle's year, make, and model before arriving, so we bring the right blank and equipment the first time.
Which programming method will you use on my specific vehicle?
Three methods exist: OBD-II port programming, ignition-based programming, and EEPROM programming. Our technician identifies your immobilizer system on arrival and selects the correct method for that vehicle. We carry equipment updated for late-model domestic and import vehicles, including Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, and European brands common in Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs.
How do you confirm the new key actually works before you leave?
Test-starting the vehicle is mandatory, not optional. We start the car a minimum of three times after programming to confirm consistent immobilizer response. We also verify that any existing working keys still function after the new key is enrolled. The job is not complete until every key on the account starts the vehicle reliably.
